The Science of Mathematics

The Science of Mathematics is focused on providing teachers, administrators, policy makers, and parents with clear links between educational practice and research to support K12 students learning of mathematics.

To understand the Science of Mathematics, we must define what mathematics is....

Mathematics is ....  a powerful discipline that enables us to understand, model, and solve real-world problems. It is a versatile instrument that empowers us to explore, understand, and shape the world around us. Mathematics spans diverse fields, making it an essential part of modern life. Mathematics is much like a tool or even an art that intertwines with our culture, emotions, and sense of wonder, making our lives richer and more meaningful. Mathematics empowers us with practical applications but also enriches our human experience in profound ways.

Like The Science of Reading, The Science of Mathematics provides research-based evidence to support the use of mathematics as an act of communication or art, providing opportunities for students to explain their world while experiencing the wonder and joy of mathematics. It is a discipline to enhance the human experience.

The Science of Mathematics provides research-based support for making decisions that pertain to the following areas:

CurriculumAn excellent mathematics programs offers a curriculum that is used to help students meet the standards, including instructional materials, activities, tasks, units, lessons, and assessments. The curriculum is the means.
AssessmentAn excellent mathematics program ensures that assessment is an integral part of instruction, provides evidence of proficiency with important mathematics content and practices, includes a variety of strategies and data sources, and informs feedback to students, instructional decisions, and program improvement.
Access and EquityAn excellent mathematics program requires that all students have access to a high-quality mathematics curriculum, effective teaching and learning, high expectations, and the support and resources needed to maximize their learning potential.
Teaching PracticeAn excellent mathematics program requires effective teaching that engages students in meaningful learning through individual and collaborative experiences that promote their ability to make sense of mathematical ideas and reason mathematically.
The Science of StatisticsAn excellent mathematics program provides opportunities for students to formulate statistical questions, collect/consider data, analyze data, and make inferences from the statistical process through classroom discourse, assessment, tools, and real/motivating data sets.
Tools and TechnologyAn excellent mathematics program integrates the use of mathematical tools and technology as essential resources to help students learn and make sense of mathematical ideas, reason mathematically, and communicate their mathematical thinking.

The Science of Mathematics is focused on providing teachers, administrators, policy makers, and parents with clear links between educational practice and research to support K12 students learning of mathematics from special education, mathematics education, and other related research endeavors

the science of math utilizes research from psychology and special education journals in isolation.

The Mathematical Association of America, through John Lockhart, has described mathematics as an art in A Mathematician's Lament. The Science of Mathematics uses research-based recommendations to help support a vision for mathematics exposed by Dr. Lockhart.
